Broom Race History

September 17, 2011 marks the 60th anniversary of the annual team race between the Gibson Island Yacht Squadron (GIYS) and the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake (SCC). Originally referred to as the GIYS/SCC Challenge, it acquired its current name when an old broom, to which the burgee of the winning club is attached and hung in the Gibson Island clubhouse, became the perpetual “trophy.” (more…)

Last Chance Regatta – October 23 & 24

Go figure! To everyone’s surprise, the Gibson Island 210s were absolutely competitive with the Boston boats after the finish of Saturday’s 3 races. The regatta was ultimately won by Charette Two (Mark Deshong) but Gibson Island boats were well represented in the final results. This year featured perfect sailing conditions on Saturday with lighter winds on Sunday. There were no gales as we have had for the past 3 years!Mark deShong's Charette Two was the regatta winner

Mark Deshong (past National Champion and Class President) was clearly in another league though, as he won all the races! Tom Price led race 1 until the last leg when Mark sailed downwind, inexorably through his lee to win. Murray Leigh challenged Mark, matching him tack for tack up the last leg (that wasn’t a leg), of the penultimate race but to no avail. (more…)

Crossland Cup

The team race with the MCYC was sailed on Sunday October 17th in westerly winds of 8-10 knots on the waters of Sillery Bay.  GIYS defeated the Maryland Club 3-0.  crossland-1 Tom Price was the PRO aboard Bill Passano’s Stardust. Tony and Beecie Kupersmith on Special Blend did the RC work at the weather mark. Jim Beh, Ben Lucas, Ed Rich, and Jim Ulmer were the other members of the Race Committee. Greg Cukor, Walter Mitchell, Margaret Clarkson, Murray Leigh, Bart Griffith, Frank Couhet, Scott Schluederberg, Tom Maddux, and Steve Schuler sailed for Gibson Island.

Race for the Broom – September 18

The 56th Race for the Broom was held on the Magothy River on September 18th followed by a party at the boat house.  The Sailing Club of the Chesapeake won the racing 3-0.

The Broom Race is an annual team race with the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake.  It is currently sailed in 210s.   Gibson Island won 3-2 in 2009.     (more…)
