St. Christopher

St. Christopher by the Sea, established in 1923, is a welcoming, non-denominational chapel that has served the Island community for almost 90 years as a center for worship and spiritual growth.  All are welcome, residents and visitors alike, at 10am Sunday services and other special seasonal services and social activities throughout the year.  Come join us!

While not a church of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, St. Christopher has always adhered to the doctrine and worship of the Episcopal Church.  However, from the outset the vision for the chapel was that it be a community church and a house of prayer for all people.

Today the people who gather to worship at St. Christopher are members of the various Christian denominations, but all are committed to serving all the people of Gibson Island and they intend that the chapel be a valuable Island resource open to all who would seek spiritual growth and strength.  Come join us.

Worship and Other Activities

Worship services are held each Sunday throughout the year at 10:00 am.

Holy Communion is celebrated on the first and third Sundays of the month.

Morning Prayer services are held on the second and fourth Sundays of the month.

Additionally, there are services on special days throughout the year:

  • Christmas Eve
  • Ash Wednesday
  • Holy Week

Baptisms, weddings, funeral, and memorial services are conducted for members of the congregation, Island residents, and Gibson Island Club members.  A lovely memorial garden is on the chapel grounds for the interment of cremated remains.

Christian education for adults and children is an integral part of Sunday morning at St. Christopher.  Adults meet at 9:00am and there is Sunday school for children during a portion of the main service.

A lively social time takes place in the parish hall after church on the second and fourth Sundays of the month.

Administration

A Board of Trustees is responsible for the secular aspects of the church.  Finances, including budgeting and the management of the endowments, fundraising, capital projects, and the upkeep of all buildings are under the auspices of the Board of Trustees.  The Rector is responsible for the spiritual aspects of the chapel to include all worship and Christian education.

Outreach

In response to the gospel imperative to love our neighbors and to care for the poor and disadvantaged, St. Christopher has an active wide-ranging program to serve others.  The chapel supports charitable projects locally and in other areas of Maryland as well as responding to needs abroad.  Outreach programs are overseen by the Board of Trustees.
